Meet Swati Srivastava
There are brilliant filmmakers who lack the training and on-ground understanding of how depolarizing works; they need to “depolarize within” first. And there are excellent moderators & facilitators who understand the work of bridging but do not understand the power of media or how to leverage it. I have more than a decade of visual storytelling experience directing, filming, editing, and producing video content for a variety of industries, my work has been shown on national TV in the US and in India, at film festivals across the world, and won many awards including the “Most Important Video of the Year” award from CNN-India. And I also have years of facilitating conversations that have helped people see their common humanity and find common ground (yes, there is a difference between the two things). I can see how the dots connect and with the right team, I can connect them from soup to nuts.
Takeaways
“There are three kinds of patriots, two bad, one good. The Bad ones are the uncritical lovers and the loveless critics. Good patriots carry on a lover’s quarrel with their country.”
“Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.”
“It is easy enough to be friendly to one’s friends. But to be friends to the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. All else is mere business.”
"There are two times when we cannot see things clearly: one when we are too close, and two when we are too far."
"There are no problems we can not solve together, and very few we can solve by ourselves."
The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either—but right through every human heart...And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained.
We need to hold the truth but we need to hold it gently. We need to learn to do both..... For if we cling to our ideas of truth, we disfigure it in rigid grip of self-righteousness, and turn it into a weapon. And weaponized truth becomes simply another truncheon to inflict pain on our fellow humans, and it will be received therefore as a thing to be rejected.
"The opposite of faith is not doubt, but certainty. Certainty is the great enemy of unity. Certainty is the deadly enemy of tolerance. If there was only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery, and therefore no need for faith."

We must learn to hold the truth. But we must learn to hold it gently. Creating media that connects is possible, but the creators must know in their bones that they need the “other” side to make sense of the whole story.
